Can a notary offer legal advice or prepare legal documents for notarization?

No.  A notary is not allowed to give legal advice and is forbidden from preparing legal documents or acting as a legal advisor.

A notary cannot explain documents to you or answer questions about the document(s) being signed/notarized.

A notary cannot suggest the type of notarization a document may need. You would need to ask for a specific notarization for your document.

Please click Notary Definitions to explain what types of notarizations are available and their meaning to determine what is right for you.

What if I don't have a valid I.D.?

You may be able to use a CREDIBLE IDENTIFYING WITNESS: The witness appears at the time of the notarization and takes an oath or affirmation before the Notary that the signer is who they claim to be but lacks other forms of I.D. They submit their information and thumbprint along with the signer.
